ADHD World
Why we're losing focus, and what to do about it
The ADHD spectrum helps us understand the connection between clinical ADHD, subthreshold ADHD, and the increasing frequency and intensity of ADHD symptoms among millions of people. ADHD World describes how our current, symptom-based definition of ADHD is slowly shifting to an appreciation of ADHD as a manifestation of unusual patterns of activity in executive function circuitry in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.
Dr. Kruse uses his expertise in neuroscience, his experience as a therapist and a captivating writing style (he keeps the pun in punditry) to illuminate the brain-based origins of ADHD, the increasing prevalence of this condition among adults, and how it is affecting not just individuals, but our whole society.
Although genetics contribute strongly to ADHD, numerous aspects of modern life are also pushing individuals further along the ADHD spectrum. Although immersion in on-line life has garnered the most attention, other factors, including plastic contamination, extreme temperatures, sleep deprivation, poor diets, decreased exercise, and loneliness lead to increased intensity and frequency of ADHD symptoms. Many of these factors involve feedback loops - poor sleep exacerbates ADHD and ADHD contributes to poorer sleep. Furthermore, many of these feedback loops interact with each other: poorer sleep is associated with poorer diets, less exercise, greater internet immersion, and increased loneliness.
We’re creating a world that promotes ADHD, yet our increasing distractibility, impaired concentration, and reflexive rather than reflective responses have made it more difficult for us to appreciate what we’re doing.
On a positive note, virtually all of the approaches - cognitive, behavioral and medications, that work for clinical ADHD also appear effective in reducing ADHD symptoms across the ADHD spectrum. ADHD World describes powerful ways to use scheduling, improve sleep and activity, and change habits to push back against the forces cultivating ADHD.
ADHD World adds nuance rather than creating new angst as we try to grapple with how our modern lives encourage ADHD symptoms in individuals, and is changing our entire society.

Recognizing Adult ADHD
What Donald Trump Can Teach Us About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD derails careers, destroys relationships, damages self esteem and even kills people, but too often, we don’t even recognize it and thus can’t treat it effectively.
Donald Trump exemplifies this issue - he walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and even tweets like a duck - so why do we duck the issue and avoid talking about his ADHD?
The trove of behavioral information in the public record provides an overabundance of data for reliably determining that Mr. Trump fulfills diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Dr. Kruse, in insightful, thoughtful, scientific, but deeply provocative ways, showcases Donald Trump as the Poster Boy for Adult ADHD in order to educate us about this condition, and to understand the 45th president’s highly unusual behavior.
Millions have it, millions more are affected by the individuals with ADHD in their lives, and our whole society is becoming more ADHD-like, so we all need to become more prepared by understanding what ADHD is and how to cope with its intrusion into our lives.
