— EDUCATION & CAREER —
In high school in northeastern Ohio, John won national honors in writing, math, and Latin before majoring in biology at the University of Rochester. Graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in only three years, he remained in Rochester to complete his medical degree and to earn a Ph.D. in neuroscience with a dissertation on circadian rhythms, garnering awards for his research and writing.
After completing residency training in San Francisco, he practiced psychiatry there for the next three decades, with a focus on adults with ADHD. He helped individuals by approaching mental health from a variety of angles, addressing not just brain chemistry and circuitry, but also whole body health, intra- and inter-personal relationships, and the impact of societal and politics. In addition to clinical work, he taught psychopharmacology and presented on mental health issues (ADHD, LGBTQ, basic emotions) at local and national professional meetings.
— WRITING & LIFE IN HAWAII —
When Donald Trump burst onto the national political scene in 2016 election, many of Dr. Kruse’s patients saw their ADHD-driven actions reflected in the behavior of Mr. Trump that was splashed across television screens. They urged Dr. Kruse to write about this public display of ADHD symptoms, hoping it would help others to recognize and understand this condition, resulting in Recognizing Adult ADHD.
Publishing his first book rekindled Dr. Kruse’s interest in writing, prompting him to compose more than three hundred articles on Medium.com where he was honored as a Top Writer in Mental Health. In addition, thousands of viewers have been learning from and enjoying his hundreds of free and informative ADHD/mental health videos on his YouTube channel.
Since moving to Hawaii in 2022, Dr. Kruse has reduced his clinical practice and continued with writing and video creation. He is an avid runner, having completed more than a few marathons (if ninety-nine is a few), and enjoys birdwatching, nature photography, gardening and baking. John and his husband are parents of thriving young adult twins.
